EDITING . . .

Editing isn’t just about catching typos—it’s about transforming a draft into a polished, professional, and publishable piece of work. There are several stages of editing, each with its own purpose. Here’s a breakdown of the main types of editing.

Developmental Editing

This is the big-picture stage. Developmental editing focuses on structure, clarity, flow, pacing, tone, and overall coherence. It’s how well the manuscript works as a whole—whether scenes are in the right order, characters are developed, arguments are sound, and ideas are clearly expressed. This is often the first step in the editing process.

Line Editing

Line editing zooms in to the paragraph and sentence level. Here, the goal is to refine language, improve rhythm and word choice, eliminate redundancy, and enhance clarity. It’s not about grammar fixes (that comes next), but about making your voice sharper, more effective, and more engaging. Line editing may be done on its own or alongside copyediting.

Copyediting

Copyediting handles the technical side of language. This includes correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and word usage. It also involves checking consistency in style, facts, and formatting, as well as flagging continuity issues. This is the final polish before layout or formatting a manuscript.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step before publication. It’s a final check for typos, formatting errors, or layout problems after the manuscript has been designed. In traditional publishing, a proofreader compares the final proof against the edited manuscript to ensure all changes were applied correctly.
